Greensand iron removal technology
Technical explanation
The regeneration solution used in Greensand technology is potassium permanganate solution. What should be the concentration during regeneration?
For most Greensand technology applications, the concentration adjustment technology is this way: adding 4 ounces (by weight) of potassium permanganate per gallon of water is the most appropriate ratio. However, for water temperatures below 13°C, more water may need to be added.
How long should Greensand media be soaked in the potassium permanganate solution to regenerate?
2-4 hours is the recommended minimum exposure time at the concentrations suggested above. Where possible, overnight soaking is recommended to ensure adequate regeneration.
Is chlorine harmful to Greensand?
No, chlorine is not harmful to Greensand. However, when Greensand is exposed to chlorine solutions above 1%, permanganate may form, thus resulting in purple water.
What is the life expectancy of Greensand media?
Greensand has a lifespan of 5-8 years. Depending on the actual conditions, properly operated and properly designed pretreatment equipment can prolong the life time.
What should be the backwash flow rate for Greensand technology?
We recommend a design flow rate of 12 gallons per minute per square foot of Greensand media. Higher flow rates may be required if the water temperature used is higher than 13°C.
How important is regular backwashing to Greensand media?
Proper and regular backwashing is critical to extending the life of Greensand media. Backwashing removes dirt from Greensand media and maintains media performance.
