Birm iron removal technology (NSF certified)
Technical explanation
Birm iron removal filter material is a common iron removal filter material in 美國, which is used to remove iron. The Birm is made by 美國 CLACK in Wisconsin. In this article, we'll explain how Birm works, and some basic guidelines you need to know to use it.
What is Birm filter media?
Birm is a filter mineral that is created by impregnating manganese salts into a core made of aluminum silicate. The medium color of this filter particle is black and the density is moderate. We have a more detailed explanation in the catalogue, please call or email to inquire.
Application method:
Operating flow rate = 3.5 – 5gpm/sqft
Backwash flow rate = 10 ~ 12gpm/square foot
Density = 40 lb/ft3
Average Lifespan = 8-10 years
pH requirement = 6.8 – 9.0
Dissolved oxygen requirement = 15%
How Birm works:
Dissolved iron and manganese cannot be removed by normal ordinary filters. They need to be oxidized and settle into larger "clumps" so that the filter can remove them. Birm is an insoluble catalyst that enhances the chemical reaction between dissolved oxygen (DO) and Fe/Mn. Once oxidized, Birm will force contaminants out of the water. Eventually, oxidized iron and manganese solids will coat the Birm particle surface and can be simply backwashed to keep the Birm clean and prolong its life. Our company's technical staff can help you check the best backwash design for free to prolong the life of your equipment.
Does Birm have a pretreatment plan?
Birm itself may be a strong enough oxidizer of a strength to easily remove water with iron levels up to 3ppm. If the dissolved oxygen content in the water is lower than 15%, you need to add an air injector to make the system work properly. Another method is to expose the water to the air for 3 minutes to achieve the design performance of the system. Birm does not recommend injecting chlorine into water (unlike the Greensand technique or the Pyrolox technique). Chlorine reduces the efficiency of Birm, and high concentrations of chlorine can deplete Birm's catalytic coating. Birm also cannot be used in water containing hydrogen sulfide (Hydrogen Sulfide) or tannin (Tannins).
Summarize:
Birm technology is fairly easy to design and use. When the on-site water chemistry is suitable, we often use Birm iron removal filtration technology.
